VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., Jan. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Global cockpit electronics supplier Visteon Corporation (NYSE: VC), will show a full range of head-up display (HUD) solutions for vehicles at the 2016 International CES®, Central Plaza (CP20) at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Jan. 6-9.

Visteon will exhibit several scalable HUD solutions targeting all segments – from entry-level to luxury vehicles – with global market appeal, including its range of first-to-market combiner HUDs, which project a virtual image in front of the driver using a transparent screen mounted on top of the instrument panel. Combiner HUD brings head-up technology to mass-market vehicles through a compact, affordable solution with a high-quality display.

Designed to keep the driver's attention on the road, HUD applications are gaining popularity as a preferred interface for vital information, such as vehicle speed and warning messages, to be displayed as a virtual image directly in the driver's field of vision.  Affordable technology solutions, the adoption of adaptive driver assistance systems (ADAS), and consumer demand for safety are bringing HUD applications into mass-market vehicles – creating a segment that is projected to register a cumulative annual growth rate of more than 20 percent.

Demonstrating the breadth of Visteon's core HUD capabilities, the range of market-proven combiner HUD solutions incorporate kinematics concepts adapting to size and movement of the screen, leading-edge picture-generation units (PGUs), optical design and high image quality in a compact package. Addressing current and upcoming applications in the luxury vehicle segment, Visteon's advanced windshield HUD features large mirrors technology for a wide field of vision and a seamless human machine interaction (HMI) with contextual information and visuals.

Following the successful launch of the first combiner HUD product, Visteon continues to invest to grow core competencies for future HUD developments, including virtual imaging, backlighting and opto-mechanical design capabilities, as well as kinematics system integration, allowing for improvements of optical quality and product robustness.

"Visteon's global electronics platform covers the full market spectrum of HUD products, providing a strong foundation for collaboration with automakers on upcoming applications, defining driver information preferences and HMI input and interaction," said Patrick Nebout, director, advanced technology and innovation for Visteon.

Four Levels of Combiner HUD

Visteon is displaying multiple HUD applications at CES, including four levels of combiner HUD that expand head-up technology beyond the luxury segment to mass-market vehicles:

  • For emerging markets – This HUD delivers critical information to the driver cost efficiently, using no kinematics, through a compact field of view and limited color definition.
  • For entry-level applications requiring an economical solution – This HUD adds kinematics and full-color display in a compact package with good optical quality.
  • For small- to medium-sized vehicles – This advanced HUD solution features increased optical quality and enhanced craftsmanship in a compact package.
  • For high-end and luxury vehicles – This HUD incorporates a larger display surface, increased brightness and superior execution, providing an attractive, affordable solution for this segment.

Visteon plans to launch its latest combiner HUD solutions with a number of automakers in the Asian and European markets during the 2016 and 2017 model years.

Windshield HUD

Visteon is demonstrating an advanced windshield HUD application on a C-segment vehicle at its CES exhibit. This HUD has an extra-large image with robust color, contrast and brightness to enhance content and the user's experience. The wide-field image – about twice the size of a normal windshield HUD – allows the driver to see information not usually displayed in HUD systems, such as menus for music, multimedia and simple maps.
