Celeno and NGCodec demonstrate sub-frame latency 5GHz Wi-Fi Wireless Virtual Reality Solutions
Demo at CES 2017 will showcase low latency H.265/HEVC 200:1 video compression over 802.11ac 5GHz Wi-Fi

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Celeno Communications, a leading provider of smart, managed silicon and software Wi-Fi solutions, and NGCodec, a Silicon Valley technology company focused on H.265/HEVC video codec development, announced today that they have joined forces to deliver a wireless virtual reality (VR) solution.

At the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 5–8, 2017, experts from both companies will showcase NGCodec's zero latency RealityCodec™ H.265/HEVC video compression technology running over Celeno's 802.11ac 5GHz Wi-Fi link for VR applications—the world's first demo of its kind. Interested parties are invited to book a meeting slot at the Celeno exhibit in the Venetian Tower. To reserve a time, please use the online form at www.ngcodec.com/ces.

The current virtual reality (VR) market is divided: mobile VR offers low cost and an untethered experience, but with low graphics fidelity and short battery life. Desktop VR, by contrast, enables a high-fidelity experience, but at a much higher price point and with the drawback of limited movement due to the necessity of cables. Wireless VR draws on the best of both.

Today's VR games are run on desktop performance CPU, GPU, and memory. NGCodec's RealityCodec compresses the output video signal of the desktop and streams it with no latency to a mobile head-mounted display (HMD). Upgrading mobile VR to run high-end VR on a low-cost mobile HMD has wide-ranging applications and benefits not only in the consumer space, but also among enterprise customers using VR to enhance the visual quality and support untethered desktop VR experiences.

"Celeno is an ideal company for us to partner with to enable this new wireless VR solution over Wi-Fi," said Oliver Gunasekara, CEO and co-founder of NGCodec. "Their high performance and low latency CL2400 4x4 11ac chip includes a built-in ARGUS spectrum intelligence engine which is able to continuously monitor the spectrum and dynamically switch Wi-Fi channels when the spectrum gets busy. This Wi-Fi innovation enables an amazing, low latency and flicker free video experience that is second to none."

"VR needs sub-frame latencies, and only NGCodec can provide 200:1 compression ratio H.265/HEVC without adding any latency," said Lior Weiss, VP Marketing and Business Development, Celeno Communications. "Other wireless approaches, such as 60GHz, have issues with line-of-sight interference, which will destroy the VR immersion."

In the future, NGCodec RealityCodec and Celeno Wi-Fi will be applicable to Augmented Reality (AR) & Mixed Reality (MR).
