Linksys Introduces New DOCSIS Cable Modems And Modem Routers At CES 2016
New Survey Finds 76% of Cable Broadband Subscribers Don't Know What Cable Modem Technology They Have

PLAYA VISTA, Calif. and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Linksys®, a leader in networking solutions for the home and business today announced a new line-up of Modems and Modem Routers at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.  The two new high speed cable modems (CM3008 8X4 and the CM3024 24X8) include DOCSIS 3.0 standard technology and are planned to be compatible with all major cable service providers. The two new modem routers include a Wireless AC1900 Router (CG7500) and a modem which carries the same DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding features as the CM3024 and a Dual-Band Wireless AC Router and ADSL/VDSL Modem (X6200). These new modem routers provide a cable modem or DSL modem and a router all-in-one for a seamless wireless broadband networking experience. The new modems and modem routers will be on display at our CES booth– South Hall, #30445.

As cable broadband service providers roll out more premium cable services, the requirement for having the right hardware to go along with the new services are critical to ensuring customers maximize their internet speeds.  "There is a lack of knowledge when it comes to cable modems.  Consumers have cable modems or gateways that don't match the cable broadband subscriptions they are paying for – thus getting slower speeds and frustrating experiences," said Justin Doucette, director of product management, Linksys.

According an IDC InfoBrief, sponsored by Linksys, titled Revisiting the Cable Modem, Where the Internet meets the Home, IDC surveyed more than one thousand U.S. participants with an active cable modem subscription to understand the behaviors of cable modem and gateway use in the home.  The research project found that the majority of people do not know what broadband plan they have or if they have the right cable modem to go with their plan:

  • Nearly half of cable broadband subscribers don't know what Internet speed they are paying for.
  • The cable modem is the Internet's point of entry to the home. But more than 75% of the people surveyed didn't know what technology their cable modem uses. Yet when it comes to choosing a broadband service, survey respondents point to speed (25%) and connection consistency (37%) as key decision drivers.
  • Of people who know their cable broadband speed, three-fourths say they get more than 50 Mbps.

The survey also indicates that people want more ways to save money on their cable bill.

  • Two-thirds of people who got their cable modem from the cable company are paying monthly rental fees of about $10 per month. Only one in five purchased their cable modem from a retailer, and three-quarters of them did it to avoid the monthly fee.

However the majority of consumers who purchased their cable modems in retail don't know what they purchased:

  • 60% of people who bought their own modem at retail said they did not know which DOCSIS standard it used.

However consumers do know what they want to do with their high speed internet.  The survey showed that most would prioritize their computers to get the fastest broadband speed, but one out of six would give it to their TVs so they can stream TV shows and movies from the Internet, an almost non-existent activity seven years ago.  To view the full IDC infobrief click here.
