Audio-Technica Expands its Hi-Res Audio Compliant Headphones Lineup at CES 2016

STOW, OH, January 6, 2016 — At CES 2016 Audio-Technica has added to its lineup of Hi-Res Audio compliant headphones with the introduction of its SonicPro® ATH-MSR7NC High-Resolution Headphones with Active Noise Cancellation, ATH-SR5BT Wireless On-Ear Headphones with Bluetooth® technology and ATH-SR5 On-Ear High-Resolution Headphones.

The ATH-MSR7NC builds upon the rave-reviewed ATH-MSR7, winner of Reviewed.com and USA TODAY’s 2015 Headphones of the Year Award, now with active noise-cancellation added.

The ATH-MSR7NC’s miniature microphones at the top of each earcup feed signals into the headphones’ sophisticated noise-cancellation circuitry, which creates a signal 180-degrees out of phase to effectively cancel ambient noise. Proprietary (patent-pending) noise-cancelling and venting technologies work together to maintain Hi-Res Audio reproduction in both passive and active-noise-cancelling modes. Locating the mics on the top, instead of the side of the earcup ensures consistent noise-cancellation performance unaffected by the listener’s head movement or wind noise. An internal rechargeable battery powers the ATH-MSR7NC’s noise-cancelling function for up to 30 hours.

The ATH-MSR7NC (SRP: US$299.95) is designed to deliver the highest level of accuracy and musical realism from high-resolution audio and other top-quality source material. These smartphone-compatible headphones features Audio-Technica’s 45 mm True Motion drivers, which employ exclusive lightweight, responsive voice coils and diaphragms. In addition, the ATH-MSR7NC utilizes two acoustic resistors that provide extended accurate bass and improved high frequencies.

The ATH-MSR7NC’s memory foam earpads, flexible swivel design and padded headband ensure a comfortable fit for any wearer. The headphones are supplied with a detachable 3.9-foot (1.2 m) cable with an integrated controller and microphone for answering/ending calls and controlling music. They also come with a standard 3.9-foot (1.2 m) cable, USB charging cable, an airline adapter and a carrying pouch.

The Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT wireless Hi-Res Audio headphones with Bluetooth technology also employ aptX® sound-improvement technology, specifically created to yield the best-possible audio performance over a Bluetooth transmission. The ATH-SR5BT remembers the last eight wireless devices for ready pairing with the listener’s favorite audio sources. Adding or replacing devices is simple thanks to the ATH-SR5BT’s NFC (Near Field Communication) functionality – simply touch any NFC-compatible device to the “N” logo on the headphones and the device and headphones are automatically paired and connected.

The ATH-SR5BT (SRP: US$199.95) features powerful, specially designed 45 mm drivers with a 5Hz – 40,000Hz frequency range to deliver extraordinary resolution and clarity with a smooth, wideband tonal balance from the deepest bass through the headphones’ richly detailed midrange and open, extended high frequencies. The ATH-SR5BT on-ear headphones are lightweight and portable with a flexible swivel design and soft memory foam earpads and headband, making them convenient and comfortable to enjoy superb on-the-go sound from high-resolution digital formats and to hear every music source at its best.

The smartphone-compatible ATH-SR5BT has a 3.9-foot (1.2 m) detachable cable with a microphone and a controller for answering calls and operating music and video playback on smartphones and other portable devices. The high-quality omnidirectional mic ensures clear voice transmission without requiring the user to speak directly into the mic. The ATH-SR5BT’s rechargeable battery provides up to 15 hours of continuous use and can be recharged using the included USB charging cable. The ATH-SR5BT also comes with a handy carrying pouch. The ATH-SR5BT is available in black (ATH-SR5BTBK) and white (ATH-SR5BTWH).

The Audio-Technica ATH-SR5 offers all the features and high-resolution audio performance of the ATH-SR5BT except without wireless Bluetooth connectivity, at a suggested retail price of US$149.95.  The ATH-SR5 is available in black (ATH-SR5BK), white (ATH-SR5WH) and navy/brown (ATH-SR5NBW).

These new Hi-Res headphones will be available in April 2016.

In Brief: The Move to Hi-Res Audio

While many listeners may believe that high-resolution audio came along with the introduction of the Compact Disc in 1982, constraints on the disc’s storage space always prevented CD audio (standardized at 44.1 kHz/16-bit) from fully and completely reproducing the original recorded sound. The advent and subsequent popularity of MP3s only made this problem more pronounced – the necessary compression of these files causes audio information to be lost, thus greatly reducing the audio quality. But with lossless audio file formats, faster Internet speeds, and storage space increasingly easy to come by (and in ever-smaller packages), the push is on to create audio equipment capable of capturing and reproducing true Hi-Res Audio, generally considered to be 96 kHz/24-bit or better. The Hi-Res Audio logo certifies that a product meets the Hi-Res Audio standards. Per these standards, headphones must have transducer frequency performance to at least 40 kHz. As a producer of these types of audiophile headphones since 1972, Audio-Technica is well-positioned to provide audio solutions that meet the demands of Hi-Res Audio media formats, allowing for the full reproduction of their extended sonic characteristics.
