Cox Expands Gigabit Speeds at Rapid Pace
Technology Upgrade Provides Access to Gig Speeds to 40 Percent of Customers Nationwide
Cox Infrastructure Powers Best of CES at Show, in Market

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW -- Cox Communications today announced that its gigabit internet service is now available to 40 percent of customers in the company footprint.  This expansion provides broad access to residential gigabit internet speeds, branded "G1GABLASTSM", across all major markets nationwide with a plan to reach nearly all customers within the next two years.

Because the latest cable broadband technology (DOCSIS 3.1) is being deployed over Cox's existing network, the company will roll out Gigablast at a faster pace.  The company is projected to make gigabit speeds available to 99% of households by the end of 2019.

While the company has provided commercial dedicated gigabit data services for more than a decade, the new technology also provides an additional gigabit internet option for small businesses and branch locations. The company first launched residential gigabit internet in 2014 and expanded to all major markets by 2016.

Cox Communications President Pat Esser made the announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "As one of the first providers of gigabit internet speeds, we are excited to rapidly expand that choice to more of our customers nationwide," said Esser. "The innovative technology and devices displayed at CES are all powered by broadband and our latest investments help bring these connected applications to the businesses and residents of the communities we serve."

In addition to creating high-speed connections for businesses and homes when the best of CES hits the market, Cox powers all the wired and wireless infrastructure today on the Las Vegas Convention Center show floor at the Consumer Electronics Show via its Cox Business/Hospitality Network division.

The Cox-powered telecom infrastructure that supports wired, cellular and WiFi devices at CES includes 2100 WiFi access points, redundant 10 gigabit backbone internet connections and a distributed antenna system (DAS) equivalent to 14 cell towers inside the convention center. At CES 2017, more than 6.4 terabytes of data crossed the Las Vegas Convention Center WiFi network via 200,000 connected devices. Cox also supports the 15-screen digital signage network within the Convention Center facility, including two new 40-foot LED screens in the concourse, and creates and manages the displayed content.

In the last 10 years, Cox has invested more than $15 billion in infrastructure upgrades to deliver video, phone and high-speed Internet and home security and automation service to homes and businesses in the company's service area. To continue as a leader in broadband services and enable future growth, the company plans to invest at least $10 billion in the next five years, with a focus on enhancing residential and business customers' experience. Cox has increased internet speeds more than 1,000 percent over the past 17 years. In 2017, the company launched Panoramic WiFi, which provides wall-to-wall coverage, eliminates "dead zones" via professional install and signal extenders and puts the customer in control with a device and network performance app.
